What Winter Does To Your Skin

Winter Storm

Skin is our bodies largest organ. It’s made up of millions of cells that regenerate constantly. We lose thirty to forty thousand skin cells per hour each day. Most of those dead skin cells fall off, and are replaced with new cells; however, not all of them leave our bodies which dulls the outer layer, aging us quicker.

Winter is especially hard on our skin because of the cold temperatures and also elements in the air that are not present during warmer months.

  • Salt added to the streets for deicing
  • Anti-freeze from cars
  • Hotter showers
  • Forced heat in our homes and offices
  • Heavy Clothing and materials (wool)
  • Freezing temperatures
  • Wood-burning Fireplaces
  • Snow and sleet
  • Wind

All of these elements are drying to our skin and wreak havoc on your delicate cells.

Not only is keeping your body and face moisturized important especially during the winter months, but exfoliation is crucial to keeping your skin healthy.

Exfoliation is the gentle removal of the top layer of dead skin cells that remain on your body. You should to exfoliate throughout the year, but it’s a necessity after the long winter.

Here are four benefits to exfoliating your entire body—

  • Leaves your skin ready for deep moisturizing. When you put moisture on dry skin, it sits on the top and does not absorb as easily into the skin. When applied after exfoliation, our skin is more receptive.
  • Increases blood circulation which promotes healing, evens skin tone and improves oxygen flow. Skin with poor circulation is dull.
  • Unclogs your pores. Clogged pores are the number one cause of acne. Be careful not to over exfoliate oily skin. When we over-dry with harsh cleansers and exfoliators, our skin produces more oil.
  • Stimulates collagen which will reduce/prevent wrinkles

Be careful not to use a harsh scrub, especially on your face, as this will damage the good cells and dry out your skin even further.

When choosing either a facial or body exfoliator, make sure it’s gentle.  The worst thing you can do to your skin is over-stimulate, which can damage the delicate cells.

Make sure you use products with organic and natural ingredients. You won’t want to scrub impurities and harmful toxins into your body.

After exfoliation, it’s important to detoxify and nourish the skin. We recommend a sauna and mud wrap after your full-body exfoliation to get the complete experience.

Proper exfoliation will leave you with younger, healthier skin.
